Privacy policy – Nzgolfodds

Running a golf odds information site calls for very little personal information, and only that is collected. The Privacy Act 2020 governs, through its information privacy principles (section 22).

The agency responsible

The body that operates Nzgolfodds is the agency responsible for personal information gathered through it. Its name, address and e-mail are available at golfoddsnz.com, which is also where every question about personal information should be directed.

What is gathered

A server log entry is written whenever a page opens. It holds the IP address, date and time, the address requested, the data volume sent, the referring page and the browser type. Security and the detection of abuse are the reasons for it, and entries are deleted or shortened to a point where they identify no one after 90 days. A person who writes to the editors provides a name, e-mail address and message, and these serve only to reply. Since there are no reader accounts, deposits or bets, payment details and identity documents are not collected.

Why, and under which principles

Collection has lawful aims connected to the site: keeping it available and secure, answering messages and, once the banner choice is made, measuring the audience (IPP 1). People are informed about what is collected and why (IPP 3), and the data is used for those aims alone (IPP 10). The site makes no automated decisions and builds no profiles.

Providers and disclosure abroad

Information is never sold. Hosting, content delivery and e-mail providers receive it, as do public authorities when the law requires. Some providers keep data outside New Zealand; disclosure abroad occurs only when the recipient is subject to comparable safeguards or the person was told and agrees, as IPP 12 demands.

Safeguards and retention

Loss and misuse are guarded against by reasonable safeguards (IPP 5). Information is held for as long as its purpose lasts (IPP 9): server logs at most 90 days, and correspondence until the matter closes plus the time to handle any claim. A notifiable privacy breach, one that has caused or is likely to cause serious harm, is reported to the Privacy Commissioner and to those affected.

Access and correction

Each person may seek access to information held about them (IPP 6) and ask for corrections (IPP 7). A reply follows as soon as reasonably practicable, within 20 working days of receipt at most (section 40).

Complaints

Someone who believes their privacy has been breached can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
